Hi, Sian here for BBC Learning English

Pending dialog line

And today, we're going to look at these two little words

Pending dialog line

So 'been' and 'gone' are both past participles

Pending dialog line

Both used with the present perfect

Pending dialog line

But they don't have the same meaning

Pending dialog line

We use 'been' to talk about complete visits

Pending dialog line

So, 'she has been to Paris' means that she visited Paris at some point in the past

Pending dialog line

And now she's back in the UK

Pending dialog line

Careful with pronunciation

Pending dialog line

When we say 'been' in a sentence, it becomes /bɪn/

Pending dialog line

She's been to Paris

Pending dialog line

But, 'she's gone to Paris' means she travelled to Paris

Pending dialog line

And she's still in Paris now

Pending dialog line

She's on holiday

Pending dialog line

She's gone to Paris

Pending dialog line

Easy, right

Pending dialog line

Been – you go somewhere and return

Pending dialog line

Gone – you go somewhere but don't return
