Having lived in the United States for more than 40 years, Jimmy Luong has never abandoned his wish to regain his Vietnamese citizenship.
For two years, he painstakingly gathered documents and made a repeated trips for that cause, which disrupted his life in the US.
Now, under the amended Law on Vietnamese Nationality, Luong may be exempted for the five year residency requirement in Vietnam
and is allowed to submit his application directly to the Vietnamese representative office in his area.
Facilitating overseas Vietnamese to regain Vietnamese citizenship is a positive step.
Many who are like me will return to Vietnam to live and do business.
As for a Vietnamese spouse abroad, like Tuong Linh , the amended law allows her husband to acquire Vietnamese citizenship while still retaining his Indian citizenship.
I was overjoyed when I received the news.
Now that my husband kept dual citizenship, everything will be much more convenient.
Vietnam's amended Nationality Law of 2025 allows all nationality restoration applications to be processed and expands dual citizenship eligibility to foreigners with close family ties to Vietnamese citizens.
Former Vietnamese nationals or those with Vietnamese relatives may also be exempt from various requirements.
For me and many other overseas Vietnamese, regaining our Vietnamese citizenship has now become much simpler and more accessible.
The new law has reduced many cumbersome requirements.
Applications for Vietnamese and naturalization or restoration filed abroad are sent to the Justice and Public Security ministries for review, with results typically issued within 20 days.
