In Myanmar, the military overthrew the country's democratically elected government and declared a one year state of emergency.

Junta.

Military officials detained Myanmar's civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi, and other leaders of the National League for Democracy party.

The army rejects the results of last November's election showing the NLD won.

The military junta has promised a new free and fair election.

A junta is a small group that takes ruling power after overthrowing a government.

If the military has seized control, as in Myanmar, it is called a military junta.
