9 Common Upward Trend Nouns [IELTS Writing Task 1/Vocabulary]

IELTS Writing task 1 provides candidates with the images of table/ chart/ or diagram and asks you to write a 150-word paragraph to describe them. However, we usually get stuck with idea for upward trend nouns. As the result, it is not difficult to see some random test takers’ essays with the word “increase” repeating for almost 5 times.

Keep using one word too many times not only lowers your band score but also makes your article become very boring to read. The reason is that this is also one of your marking criteria, lexical resource (accounts for 25% of the total mark), which means your ability to use a wide range of new words.

In order to prevent that consequence, it is obvious that you have to learn more to diversify your vocabulary, especially in comparing statistics or describing trends. This somehow might freak you out a little bit since there are too many things and you do not know where to start. It is ok, eJOY will give you a hand with that. This article will bring you 10 nouns to illustrate the upward trend. In particular, the last section will recommend some tips for you to remember those words, eliminate the stress of being short on vocabulary. Without further ado, let’s dive into it.

What is special about the list of nouns describing trends composed by eJOY?

Instead of just giving you a list of new words along with their meanings, eJOY has been working harder, gathering more information in order to come up with a brand new list. This list provides words, their meanings, and some examples of how to use them in different contexts. This will  help you to clarify the nuance of those words as well as memories them The list will contain:

  • Transcription

There is a fact that if you just write a word, but do not know how to pronounce it, then the chances are that you will forget about it sooner or later. In addition, you will struggle with making use of the word properly in different contexts such as conversation or presentation.

  • English meaning

When studying English, one of the common mistakes of learners is always trying to translate new words into Vietnamese. On the one hand, it might help you to memorize easier, however, the negative impact is that it could cause you to be dependent on the Vietnamese meaning all the time. Moreover, you are likely to study English in the Vietnamese way of thinking. Day by day, this will turn into a big obstacle for you to absorb a language.

If it confuses you, take this as an example. You all know the meaning of the word “book”, which is an object you use to read. Nevertheless, in the sentence “I want to book a room.”, “book” means the action of arranging to have a room at a certain time in the future. So, depends on each specific context, the word can have a different meaning.

As to fill in your brain with all of these new words, you had better:

  • Write down all the words in your vocab notebook
  • Practice making sentences using these words
  • Remind yourself to study every day till it becomes a habit

Anyway, these are just the fundamental steps for you to follow. Not everyone can do that for the reason of time or something else. In addition, it might make you lose heart because, to be honest, it is kind of boring to do so every day.

Therefore, if you find your own way of studying new words, just try following it to see if it works or not.
