When I was little,
loading
I thought my country was the best on the planet,
loading
and I grew up singing a song called "Nothing To Envy."
loading
And I was very proud.
loading
In school, we spent a lot of time
loading
studying the history of Kim Il-Sung,
loading
but we never learned much about the outside world,
loading
except that America, South Korea, Japan are the enemies.
loading
Although I often wondered about the outside world,
loading
I thought I would spend my entire life in North Korea,
loading
until everything suddenly changed.
loading
When I was seven years old, I saw my first public execution,
loading
but I thought my life in North Korea was normal.
loading
My family was not poor,
loading
and myself, I had never experienced hunger.
loading
But one day, in 1995, my mom brought home a letter
loading
from a coworker's sister.
loading
It read, "When you read this, all five family members
loading
will not exist in this world,
loading
because we haven't eaten for the past two weeks.
loading
We are lying on the floor together,
loading
and our bodies are so weak we are ready to die."
loading
I was so shocked.
loading
This was the first time I heard
loading
that people in my country were suffering.
loading
Soon after, when I was walking past a train station,
loading
I saw something terrible
loading
that I can't erase from my memory.
loading
A lifeless woman was lying on the ground,
loading
while an emaciated child in her arms
loading
just stared helplessly at his mother's face.
loading
But nobody helped them, because they were so focused
loading
on taking care of themselves and their families.
loading
A huge famine hit North Korea in the mid-1990s.
loading
Ultimately, more than a million North Koreans
loading
died during the famine, and many only survived
loading
by eating grass, bugs and tree bark.
loading
Power outages also became more and more frequent,
loading
so everything around me was completely dark at night
loading
except for the sea of lights in China,
loading
just across the river from my home.
loading
I always wondered why they had lights but we didn't.
loading
This is a satellite picture showing North Korea at night
loading
compared to neighbors.
loading
This is the Amrok River,
loading
which serves as a part of the border
loading
between North Korea and China.
loading
As you can see, the river can be very narrow
loading
at certain points, allowing North Koreans to secretly cross.
loading
But many die.
loading
Sometimes, I saw dead bodies floating down the river.
loading
I can't reveal many details [about] how I left North Korea,
loading
but I only can say that during the ugly years of the famine
loading
I was sent to China to live with distant relatives.
loading
But I only thought
loading
that I would be separated from my family for a short time.
loading
I could have never imagined
loading
that it would take 14 years to live together.
loading
In China, it was hard living as a young girl without my family.
loading
I had no idea what life was going to be like
loading
as a North Korean refugee,
loading
but I soon learned it's not only extremely difficult,
loading
it's also very dangerous,
loading
since North Korean refugees are considered in China
loading
as illegal migrants.
loading
So I was living in constant fear
loading
that my identity could be revealed,
loading
and I would be repatriated to a horrible fate
loading
back in North Korea.
loading
One day, my worst nightmare came true,
loading
when I was caught by the Chinese police
loading
and brought to the police station for interrogation.
loading
Someone had accused me of being North Korean,
loading
so they tested my Chinese language abilities
loading
and asked me tons of questions.
loading
I was so scared,
loading
I thought my heart was going to explode.
loading
If anything seemed unnatural, I could be imprisoned
loading
and repatriated.
loading
I thought my life was over,
loading
but I managed to control all the emotions inside me
loading
and answer the questions.
loading
After they finished questioning me,
loading
one official said to another,
loading
"This was a false report.
loading
She's not North Korean."
loading
And they let me go. It was a miracle.
loading
Some North Koreans in China seek asylum
loading
in foreign embassies,
loading
but many can be caught by the Chinese police
loading
and repatriated.
loading
These girls were so lucky.
loading
Even though they were caught,
loading
they were eventually released
loading
after heavy international pressure.
loading
These North Koreans were not so lucky.
loading
Every year, countless North Koreans are caught in China
loading
and repatriated to North Korea,
loading
where they can be tortured, imprisoned
loading
or publicly executed.
loading
Even though I was really fortunate to get out,
loading
many other North Koreans have not been so lucky.
loading
It's tragic that North Koreans have to hide their identities
loading
and struggle so hard just to survive.
loading
Even after learning a new language and getting a job,
loading
their whole world can be turned upside down in an instant.
loading
That's why, after 10 years of hiding my identity,
loading
I decided to risk going to South Korea,
loading
and I started a new life yet again.
loading
Settling down in South Korea was a lot more challenging
loading
than I had expected.
loading
English was so important in South Korea,
loading
so I had to start learning my third language.
loading
Also, I realized there was a wide gap
loading
between North and South.
loading
We are all Korean, but inside,
loading
we have become very different
loading
due to 67 years of division.
loading
I even went through an identity crisis.
loading
Am I South Korean or North Korean?
loading
Where am I from? Who am I?
loading
Suddenly, there was no country
loading
I could proudly call my own.
loading
Even though adjusting to life in South Korea was not easy,
loading
I made a plan.
loading
I started studying for the university entrance exam.
loading
Just as I was starting to get used to my new life,
loading
I received a shocking phone call.
loading
The North Korean authorities
loading
intercepted some money that I sent to my family,
loading
and, as a punishment, my family was going
loading
to be forcibly removed
loading
to a desolate location in the countryside.
loading
They had to get out quickly,
loading
so I started planning how to help them escape.
loading
North Koreans have to travel incredible distances
loading
on the path to freedom.
loading
It's almost impossible to cross the border
loading
between North Korea and South Korea,
loading
so, ironically, I took a flight back to China
loading
and I headed toward the North Korean border.
loading
Since my family couldn't speak Chinese,
loading
I had to guide them,
loading
somehow, through more than 2,000 miles in China
loading
and then into Southeast Asia.
loading
The journey by bus took one week,
loading
and we were almost caught several times.
loading
One time, our bus was stopped
loading
and boarded by a Chinese police officer.
loading
He took everyone's I.D. cards,
loading
and he started asking them questions.
loading
Since my family couldn't understand Chinese,
loading
I thought my family was going to be arrested.
loading
As the Chinese officer approached my family,
loading
I impulsively stood up, and I told him
loading
that these are deaf and dumb people
loading
that I was chaperoning.
loading
He looked at me suspiciously,
loading
but luckily he believed me.
loading
We made it all the way to the border of Laos,
loading
but I had to spend almost all my money
loading
to bribe the border guards in Laos.
loading
But even after we got past the border,
loading
my family was arrested and jailed
loading
for illegal border crossing.
loading
After I paid the fine and bribe,
loading
my family was released in one month,
loading
but soon after, my family was arrested and jailed again
loading
in the capital of Laos.
loading
This was one of the lowest points in my life.
loading
I did everything to get my family to freedom,
loading
and we came so close,
loading
but my family was thrown in jail
loading
just a short distance from the South Korean embassy.
loading
I went back and forth between the immigration office
loading
and the police station,
loading
desperately trying to get my family out,
loading
but I didn't have enough money
loading
to pay a bribe or fine anymore.
loading
I lost all hope.
loading
At that moment, I heard one man's voice ask me,
loading
"What's wrong?"
loading
I was so surprised
loading
that a total stranger cared enough to ask.
loading
In my broken English, and with a dictionary,
loading
I explained the situation, and without hesitating,
loading
the man went to the ATM
loading
and he paid the rest of the money for my family
loading
and two other North Koreans to get out of jail.
loading
I thanked him with all my heart, and I asked him,
loading
"Why are you helping me?"
loading
"I'm not helping you," he said.
loading
"I'm helping the North Korean people."
loading
I realized that this was a symbolic moment in my life.
loading
The kind stranger symbolized new hope for me
loading
and the North Korean people when we needed it most,
loading
and he showed me the kindness of strangers
loading
and the support of the international community
loading
are truly the rays of hope we North Korean people need.
loading
Eventually, after our long journey,
loading
my family and I were reunited in South Korea,
loading
but getting to freedom is only half the battle.
loading
Many North Koreans are separated from their families,
loading
and when they arrive in a new country,
loading
they start with little or no money.
loading
So we can benefit from the international community
loading
for education, English language training,
loading
job training, and more.
loading
We can also act as a bridge
loading
between the people inside North Korea
loading
and the outside world,
loading
because many of us stay in contact
loading
with family members still inside,
loading
and we send information and money
loading
that is helping to change North Korea from inside.
loading
I've been so lucky, received so much help
loading
and inspiration in my life,
loading
so I want to help give aspiring North Koreans
loading
a chance to prosper
loading
with international support.
loading
I'm confident that you will see more and more
loading
North Koreans succeeding all over the world,
loading
including the TED stage.
loading
Thank you.
