The amount of plastic waste
loading
produced since the 1950's
loading
as it has not been burned or recycled
loading
is around 49 billion tons
loading
This could all have been dumped into a 17 meter
loading
deep landfill the size of Manhattan
loading
While much of it has indeed ended up in landfill
loading
around the world far too much of it has found
loading
it's way into the natural environment
loading
With around 10 million tons a year ending up in the ocean
loading
Over half of all plastic is used
loading
just once and then thrown away
loading
Taking hundreds of years to decompose
loading
Apart from the preception that plastic waste
loading
is ugly and unnatural
loading
it has also been known to harm marine animals
loading
And exposed to salt water and sunlight it can
loading
fragment into micro plastics
loading
which some people fear can poison sea life
loading
and humans who subsequently consume it
loading
But is it as big an environmental problem
loading
as the plastic panic across the rich worlds suggests
loading
Plastics account for just 10% of the 13 billion tons
loading
of waste produced globally every year
loading
Air pollution is blamed for seven million deaths
loading
per year world wide
loading
Ocean acidification the results of man made
loading
carbon dioxide omissions is disastrous for coral reefs
loading
and many other forms of sea life
loading
In any case efforts are being made to improve the situation
loading
or at least lessen the impact of plastic
loading
In 2008 Rwanda introduced strict laws
loading
banning plastic bags and many countries
loading
have since followed with similar initiatives
loading
In December 2017 193 countries committed to a UN plan
loading
to stop plastic waste entering the ocean
loading
To eliminate plastic waste reaching the natural
loading
environment it must first be collected
loading
In developed countries virtually all of it tis
loading
But five countries in Asia are dumping more plastic
loading
into the oceans than the rest of the world combined
loading
If the world wants to tackle plastic pollution
loading
then it should first concentrate it's efforts
loading
on the biggest culprits in Southeast Asia
loading
Until it does all other efforts will be a drop in the ocean
