Typhoon Yagi: 2024’s second-strongest tropical storm makes landfall in southern China
Heavy rains and strong winds swept through Hainan province Friday as a powerful typhoon, dubbed Yagi, made landfall in China. The storm triggered widespread outages and carried maximum sustained winds of 234 km/h.
Considered the second-most powerful tropical cyclone in 2024, Yagi has doubled in strength since hitting the Philippines earlier this week, leaving at least 16 people dead.
Though Yagi edged past Hong Kong much of the city was shut down as residents braced what they expected would be a historic super typhoon.
Yagi is forecasted to batter coastal provinces of Vietnam late Friday, prompting thousands to evacuate to temporary shelters.
