it was very difficult for me to figure
loading
out where my boundaries were because
loading
I've grown up poor and didn't have
loading
anything
loading
I can't quit this job because this is
loading
what everybody else wants to do
loading
and if I quit this job what am I going
loading
to do what we all want is to be able to
loading
live out the truest highest expression
loading
of ourselves when people show you who
loading
they are believe them the first time
loading
hello bleep nation its Evan my one word
loading
is believe and I believe in people more
loading
than they believe in themselves and my
loading
sincere hope is that if you see in
loading
yourself what I see in you you'll be
loading
able to change the planet so to help you
loading
on your journey today we're going to
loading
learn from entrepreneur talk show host
loading
and philanthropist Oprah Winfrey and my
loading
take on her top ten rules of success
loading
volume three
loading
rule number six is my personal favorite
loading
and I'd love to know which one you guys
loading
like the best also as you're watching if
loading
you hear something that really resonates
loading
with you please leave it down in the
loading
comments below about quotes around it so
loading
other people can be inspired by it as
loading
well and if you leave it within the
loading
first couple hours of this video going
loading
live you have a chance to win one of two
loading
daily prizes
loading
you know cuz when I first started making
loading
money and it was you know my salary or
loading
my earnings were published all over the
loading
place I mean the first year I was like
loading
really loving that much money oh my god
loading
it was very difficult for me to figure
loading
out where my boundaries were because I
loading
grown up poor and didn't have anything
loading
so it's easy when you don't have
loading
anything that people ask you for money
loading
and they say I need five hundred and I
loading
don't have it because I'm just trying to
loading
get my rent paid it's harder when you're
loading
multi billion dollar salary is now in
loading
the paper and you get a lot of friends
loading
and cousins you didn't have before so
loading
how do you set boundaries for yourself I
loading
was having trouble setting boundaries
loading
myself for myself for even strangers
loading
people would just show up at my door in
loading
Chicago and they over I live mothers and
loading
please help me and I would because she
loading
knows I haven't so don't try that now
loading
though okay don't try that now I figured
loading
it out
loading
so what I learned was is that oh the
loading
reason why people keep showing up is
loading
because my intention is to make them
loading
think that I'm such a nice person that
loading
you can ask me for anything you can get
loading
me to do anything I'm going to say yes
loading
I'm going to say yes so when Stevie
loading
called me this time I thought I try out
loading
my first no on Stevie let's start big he
loading
wanted me to donate some money to a
loading
charity and I didn't want to donate to
loading
the charity because I have my own
loading
charities and I care about a lot of
loading
people but the problem is when you you
loading
have money everybody thinks you just
loading
want to give to everything so every
loading
letter I ever get starts with we know
loading
you love the children yes I do love the
loading
children but somebody else is going to
loading
have to help the children
loading
so I said to Stevie I said to Stevie no
loading
and as a person who has that disease too
loading
please I was waiting for him then just
loading
to say I will never speak to you again I
loading
will never call you I will never sing a
loading
song for you and he didn't he just said
loading
okay okay
loading
okay it's okay he said okay check you
loading
later and what I learned for that is
loading
many times you will have angst and worry
loading
about things and put yourself in a state
loading
like someone said this morning cuz their
loading
phone went off they were mortified over
loading
a phone I said really you will put
loading
yourself in a state when the other
loading
person really isn't even thinking about
loading
you so learning that I could
loading
specifically determine for myself what
loading
the boundaries were for me what I wanted
loading
to do give my money give my time give of
loading
my service to who I wanted to give it to
loading
when I did that I get to make that
loading
decision and just because you get a
loading
hundred requests a week doesn't mean you
loading
have to try to fulfill all of that just
loading
because you have all
loading
these demands on your time and on you
loading
doesn't mean that you have to say yes
loading
you get to decide because you're the
loading
master of your fate the captain of your
loading
soul is William Ernest Henley said in
loading
Invictus an understanding that really
loading
changed the meaning of my life in that I
loading
was not no longer driven by what other
loading
people wanted me to do but took charge
loading
of my own destiny making choices based
loading
upon what do I feel is the next right
loading
move for me Quincy Jones had I would not
loading
even say an important role I would say V
loading
role in my acting career Quincy Jones
loading
discovered me and it's so interesting to
loading
me because when I was working as a
loading
television news woman in Baltimore and
loading
really all I wanted to do was be in
loading
actors but I was doing television and I
loading
felt at the time well I I can't quit
loading
this job because this is what everybody
loading
else wants to do
loading
and if I quit this job what am I going
loading
to do um and I was going to a speech
loading
coach at the time that the station had
loading
sent me to they you know they ever the
loading
broadcasting school they sent everybody
loading
the same woman and I was telling her you
loading
know I really don't want to do this what
loading
I really want to do is act and she says
loading
my dear you don't want to act because if
loading
you wanted to actually be doing it but
loading
you want to be my Diaz a star because if
loading
you wanted to actually be waiting tables
loading
in New York you bit my thought now why
loading
am I gonna wait tables of are already
loading
working in TV so I said well when I
loading
think is going to happen is I will be
loading
discovered because I wanted so badly
loading
somebody's going to have to discover me
loading
and she said you just dream your dream
loading
your dream er so when it happened I
loading
called her up said you will not bow when
loading
poof discovered and it really was a
loading
discovery it's like one of those who
loading
Lana Turner serves only I wasn't a
loading
drugstore he was uh in his hotel room
loading
saw me on TV it was unbelievable the
loading
interesting thing about that is that I
loading
believe that thought are the greatest
loading
vehicle to change power
loading
and success in the world everything
loading
begins with thought I mean the chairs
loading
that were sitting in the room that were
loading
in all started because somebody thought
loading
it so I thought up the color purple for
loading
myself
loading
I know this is going to sound strange to
loading
you I read the book I got so many copies
loading
of that book
loading
I passed the book around everybody I
loading
knew if I was on the bus I'd pass it out
loading
to people and when I heard that there
loading
was going to be a movie I started I
loading
started talking it up for myself I did
loading
know Quincy Jones or Steven Spielberg or
loading
how on earth I would get in this movie
loading
I've never acted in my life but I I felt
loading
it so intensely that I had to be a part
loading
of that movie I just I really do believe
loading
I created it for myself I wanted it more
loading
than anything in the world and would
loading
have done anything to do it anything to
loading
do it
loading
turn your wound into wisdom you will be
loading
wounded many times in your life you'll
loading
make mistakes some people will call them
loading
failures but I have learned that
loading
failures is really God's Way of saying
loading
excuse me you're moving in the wrong
loading
direction it's just an experience
loading
so the experience just an experience I
loading
remember being taken off the air in
loading
Baltimore being told that I was no
loading
longer be being fit for television and
loading
that I could not anger the news because
loading
I used to go out on the stories and my
loading
own truth was even though I'm not a
loading
weeper
loading
I would cry for the people in the
loading
stories and which really wasn't very
loading
effective as a news reporter to be
loading
covered afire and crying cuz the people
loading
lost her house and it wasn't until they
loading
I was demoted as a on-air anchorwoman
loading
and thrown into the talk-show arena to
loading
get rid of me that I allowed my own
loading
truth to come through and the first day
loading
I was on the air doing my first talk
loading
show back in 1978 it felt like breathing
loading
which is what your true passion should
loading
feel like it should be so natural to you
loading
and so I took what had been a mistake
loading
what had been perceived as a failure
loading
with my career as an anchorwoman in the
loading
news business and turned it into a
loading
talk-show career that's done okay for me
loading
what drives you to keep working so hard
loading
you could you know you and I are in the
loading
60s category and so when you're in your
loading
60s you know you've lived more than
loading
you're going to live yeah a listicle e
loading
so when you realize you live more than
loading
you going to live you can say why not
loading
relax a little bit why not just ease up
loading
why have you decided to even work harder
loading
than you did before because I think
loading
David that everybody you know the thing
loading
that works for me all these years
loading
whether it was the magazine or which I
loading
still have or whether it was the show I
loading
could I understood that there's a common
loading
denominator in the human experience and
loading
I want the same thing you want which is
loading
the same thing you want and you want
loading
what we all want is to be able to live
loading
out the truest highest expression of
loading
ourselves as a human being that doesn't
loading
end until you take your last breath
loading
what is the truest highest vision that
loading
you hold for yourself no matter where
loading
you are in your life there's always the
loading
next level there's always the next level
loading
to the last breath so I feel that I
loading
always knew
loading
I would get be done with the show when I
loading
felt like oh I've said as much as I
loading
could say here on this platform and then
loading
how will I be used if they were the
loading
Ferrer theme song to my life
loading
Amazing Grace would be one of them and
loading
keep on using me to use me up would be
loading
another one you know that bill where
loading
their songs are long so I feel that
loading
until you have used your value as a
loading
human being you're not done when I first
loading
started as a broadcaster I was 19 very
loading
insecure thrown into television
loading
pretending to be Barbara Walters looking
loading
nothing like her and still going to
loading
college so I do all my classes in the
loading
morning from 8:00 to 1:00 and then the
loading
afternoon I work from 2:00 to 10:00 and
loading
did the 6 o'clock news and would stay up
loading
and study and all that stuff that you
loading
know until 1 2 or 3 o'clock in the
loading
morning and then just start the routine
loading
all over again
loading
and my classmates were so jealous of me
loading
that I remember like taking my little
loading
hundred and fifteen dollar paycheck and
loading
at the time I thought was really a lot
loading
but taking a hundred fifty dollars and
loading
trying to appease them I would like
loading
alway anytime you money needed money I
loading
was always offering all you need ten
loading
dollars or taking them out for pizza or
loading
in pizza for the class and things like
loading
that trying to that hole disease -
loading
please that's where it was the worst for
loading
me I think because I wanted to be
loading
accepted by them and could not be
loading
because first of all I didn't have the
loading
time they wanted me to pledge and I
loading
didn't have the time to pledge I was I
loading
didn't have the time to be a part of all
loading
the other college activities or a part
loading
of that whole lifestyle and it was very
loading
difficult for me socially really one of
loading
the worst times of my life because I was
loading
trying to fit in in school and be a part
loading
of that culture but also trying to build
loading
a career in television it's very
loading
difficult for me to even see myself as
loading
successful because I still see myself as
loading
in the process of becoming successful to
loading
me successful is getting to the point
loading
where you are absolutely comfortable
loading
with yourself and it does not matter how
loading
many things you have acquired the
loading
ability to learn to say no and not to
loading
feel guilty about it to me is about the
loading
greater
loading
to success I have achieved the fact that
loading
I have you know in the public side done
loading
whatever is fine it's all a part of a
loading
process for growing for me but to me to
loading
have the in the kind of internal
loading
strength and internal courage it takes
loading
to say no I will not let you treat me
loading
this way is what success is all about
loading
it's the same thing that prevents you
loading
from being abused as a child that
loading
prevents you from being abused as an
loading
adult that allows you to build success
loading
for yourself I will not be treated this
loading
way I demand only the best for myself
loading
you are worthy to say no you work that
loading
it's okay if you say no it's okay if you
loading
say no and then people don't like you
loading
that's really okay the important thing
loading
is how you feel about what you're doing
loading
how you feel about yourself it's a long
loading
struggle though it's a long struggle and
loading
I'm just hoping that you know in the
loading
work that I do on the show and the
loading
speaking that I do around the country
loading
and that young people who are watching
loading
this can get the lesson sooner than I
loading
did because it's painful because you
loading
keep repeating it over and over and over
loading
until you get it right and what I found
loading
is that every time you have to repeat
loading
the lesson it gets worse because it's
loading
you know it's I call it God trying to
loading
get your attention universe trying to
loading
get your attention so we didn't get your
loading
attention the first time so we're gonna
loading
have to hit you a little harder this
loading
time so I'm still doing it I'm still
loading
learning create the highest grandest
loading
vision possible for your life because
loading
you become what you believe when I was a
loading
little girl
loading
Mississippi growing up on the farm only
loading
buckwheat is a role model watching my
loading
grandmother boil clothes and a big iron
loading
pot through the screen door because we
loading
didn't have a washing machine and made
loading
everything we had I watched her and
loading
realized somehow inside myself and the
loading
spirit of myself that although this was
loading
segregated Mississippi and I was colored
loading
and female that my life could be bigger
loading
greater than what I saw I remember being
loading
4 or 5 years old I certainly couldn't
loading
articulate it but it was a feeling
loading
and the feeling that I allowed myself to
loading
follow I allowed myself to follow
loading
because if you were to ask me what is
loading
the secret to my success it is because I
loading
understand that there is a Power greater
loading
than myself that rules my life and in
loading
life in life if you can be still long
loading
enough in all of your endeavors and the
loading
good times the hard times to connect
loading
yourself to the source I call it God you
loading
can call it whatever you want to the
loading
force nature Allah the power if you can
loading
connect yourself to the source and allow
loading
the energy that is your personality your
loading
lifeforce to be connected to the greater
loading
force anything is possible for you I am
loading
proof of that I think that my life the
loading
fact that I was born where I was born
loading
and the time that I was and have been
loading
able to do what I've done
loading
speaks to the possibility not that I am
loading
special but that it could be done I
loading
remember when I started the school that
loading
I said to my beloved friend Maya Angelou
loading
said Maya I'm so I'm so proud that I was
loading
able to create the school I said this is
loading
going to be my greatest legacy and Maya
loading
said to me you have no idea you have no
loading
idea what your legacy will be she said
loading
to me because your legacy is every life
loading
you've touched and that shifted the way
loading
I saw legacy or what you leave behind or
loading
what you do because Maya was explaining
loading
to me that you know over all the years
loading
of watching your show everybody who
loading
decided that they were going to go back
loading
to school or lose weight or no longer
loading
hit their children or get out of a bad
loading
marriage all of those people who have
loading
seen and experienced your voice and the
loading
same thing with everybody here you have
loading
no idea what your legacy will be your
loading
legacy is every life that you've touched
loading
and we like to think of it I know you
loading
have done amazing things with your
loading
philanthropy we'd like to think that
loading
these great philanthropic moments are
loading
the ones that lead
loading
the impact or will make the huge
loading
difference in the world but it's really
loading
what you do every day it's how you use
loading
your life to be a light to somebody
loading
else's you know and it's how you use
loading
your work as an expression of your own
loading
art whatever that is my intention in
loading
creating masterclass came from the
loading
understanding that everybody's story is
loading
the same all stories are connected and
loading
there is nothing that anyone who's
loading
living on earth has ever felt or known
loading
or experienced on a soul level that
loading
hasn't been felt or known or experienced
loading
by someone else one of the most
loading
difficult things in life is feeling that
loading
you are the only one you are the only
loading
one who's travelled this path has felt
loading
this way I had nowhere to go I was
loading
homeless at the time I lost my family
loading
next thing I know I'm in this car for
loading
three years for him I'm struggling
loading
who's experienced such devastation or
loading
joy or triumph or victory so for me I
loading
define a master as someone who has fully
loading
stepped in and owned the full progress
loading
and trajectory of their life persistence
loading
pays off that's lesson one but hearing
loading
stories told from the mouths of people
loading
who know how to live how to
loading
course-correct
loading
how to keep going how to never quit how
loading
to rejoice in the good times and have
loading
faith in the bag
loading
those people are masters anyone who can
loading
do that is a master and their ability to
loading
share their stories only helps the
loading
trajectory of others who listen what I
loading
learned going to beauty salon and asking
loading
them after the news director had told me
loading
that my hair was too thick and my eyes
loading
are too far apart and I needed a
loading
makeover and sitting in a beauty salon
loading
in a French beauty salon allowing them
loading
to put a French perm on my black hair
loading
and having the term burn through my
loading
cerebral cortex and not being the woman
loading
that I am now so not having the courage
loading
to say this is a barn in me and coming
loading
out a week later bald and having to go
loading
on the air you learn a lot about
loading
yourself when you're black and a woman
loading
involved and trying to be an anchorwoman
loading
you look you learn you not Diana Ross
loading
and that you're not Barbara Walter is
loading
trying to be I was at the time I had a
loading
lot of lessons
loading
I remember going on the air many times
loading
and not reading my copy ahead of time
loading
and I was on the air one night and ran
loading
across the word VAR ba D OS that maybe
loading
barbatus to you but it was Barbados to
loading
me that night
loading
and telling the story as an egg a woman
loading
about a vote in absentia California I
loading
thought it was located near San
loading
Francisco
loading
and one of the worst one of the worst
loading
this is when I broke out of my barber
loading
shell because I'm sitting there crossing
loading
my legs trying to talk like Barbara be
loading
like Barbara and I was reading a story
loading
about someone with a blaze attitude
loading
which if I had gone to Wellesley I would
loading
have known it was blase and I started to
loading
laugh at myself on the air and broke
loading
through my Barbara shell and had decided
loading
on that day that laughing was okay even
loading
though Barbara happened at that time
loading
and it was through my series of mistakes
loading
that I learned that I could be a better
loading
Oprah than I could be a better Barbara
loading
and I allowed Barbara to be the mentor
loading
for me as she always has been and I
loading
decided then to try to pursue the idea
loading
of being myself and I am just thrilled
loading
that I get paid so much every day for
loading
just just being myself but it was a
loading
lesson long in coming recognizing that I
loading
had the instinct that the inner voice
loading
that told me that you need to try to
loading
find a way to answer to your own truth
loading
was the voice I needed to be still and
loading
listen to get this this is just remember
loading
this because this will happen many times
loading
your life when the people show you who
loading
they are believe them the first time not
loading
the 29th time that's particularly good
loading
when it comes to men situations because
loading
when he doesn't call back the first time
loading
when you're mistreated the first time
loading
when you see someone who shows you a
loading
lack of integrity or dishonesty the
loading
first time know that that will be
loading
followed by many many many other times
loading
that will at some point in life come
loading
back to haunt or hurt you when people
loading
show you who they are believe them the
loading
first time live your life from a point
loading
of view of truth and you will live your
loading
life from truth and you will survive
loading
everything everything I believe even
loading
death you will survive everything if you
loading
can live your life from a point of view
loading
of truth close your eyes for a moment
loading
will you please and breathe with me
loading
just close your eyes and if you will put
loading
your thumb to your middle finger and
loading
gather your other fingers around and
loading
let's feel the vibration and pulse of
loading
your personal energy as you take three
loading
deep breaths with me inhale
loading
and as you exhale just feel the
loading
vibration energy blood pulsating through
loading
your body through you and another inhale
loading
and another inhale and keep your eyes
loading
closed and let's just think about this
loading
day this day that you have been graced
loading
to breathe in and out thousands of times
loading
this day where many of those breasts
loading
were taken for granted you just expected
loading
the next one to come but the truth is
loading
there's no guarantee that the next one
loading
comes this day how you started your day
loading
what your thoughts were this morning how
loading
you've carried yourself through this day
loading
how you've been allowed to have
loading
encounters and experiences some
loading
challenging some more life enhancing
loading
that push you forward another day
loading
of being here on the planet Earth as a
loading
human being just think about that after
loading
all you've been through and this day
loading
alone and the many days and years passed
loading
how you got here to this prestigious
loading
esteemed University the choices you made
loading
that have brought you to this day open
loading
your heart and quietly to yourself say
loading
the only prayer that's ever needed thank
loading
you thank you
loading
thank you you're still here and you get
loading
another chance this day to do better and
loading
be better another chance to become more
loading
of who you were created and what you
loading
were created to fulfill thank you
loading
thank you guys so much for watching I
loading
made this video because Charlene Benton
loading
asked me to if there's someone you like
loading
better profile in their future top ten
loading
please check out the link down in the
loading
description below and you can cast your
loading
vote on who we should do next I also
loading
want to give a quick shout out to Megan
loading
Lofton Megan thank you so much for
loading
picking up a copy of my book your one
loading
word and doing the review and post it on
loading
your YouTube channel as well I really
loading
really really appreciate so I really
loading
really really appreciate the support and
loading
I'm so glad you enjoyed the book thank
loading
you guys again for watching I believe in
loading
you I hope you continue to believe in
loading
yourself and whatever your one word is
loading
much love I'll see you soon
loading
I have paid attention to my life because
loading
I understand that my life just like your
loading
life is always speaking to you where you
loading
are in the language with the people with
loading
the circumstances and experiences that
loading
you can understand and interpret if you
loading
are willing to see that always life God
loading
is speaking to you now it took me a
loading
while to actually really get this and to
loading
understand it but once I did I started
loading
paying attention to everything and one
loading
of the reasons why I can now accept the
loading
fact that I can offer my gatherings of
loading
information and wisdom and call myself a
loading
spiritual teacher is that every single
loading
person who ever came on my show and I
loading
hear there's like 37,000 guests I've
loading
talked to a lot of them came from
loading
dysfunction and a lot of them wouldn't
loading
appear to be teachers but every one of
loading
them had something to say that was
loading
meaningful and valuable and that I could
loading
use to grow myself into the best of
loading
myself which is what all of our jobs are
loading
your number one job is to become more of
loading
yourself and to grow yourself into the
loading
best of yourself
loading
how do you stay fresh and how do you
loading
like what can you attribute staying in
loading
the bees for so long
loading
I think every year you're trying to
loading
reinvent yourself and you stay in touch
loading
with what other people are doing
loading
thinking feeling I have always felt that
loading
my instinct and ability to connect with
