Hello! I'm Emma from mmmEnglish and in this
loading
lesson we're focusing on adjectives. But
loading
not just any adjectives! Pairs of
loading
adjectives that can end in either ED or
loading
ING, because you might be a little
loading
confused about when you can use each
loading
type of adjective!
loading
Lots of these english adjectives are
loading
made by adding ED or ING to a verb. For
loading
example, the verb 'frustrate' can become an
loading
adjective by adding ED - 'frustrated' or ING
loading
'frustrating'. These endings are called
loading
suffixes and when we add them to the end
loading
of a verb they transform our verb into
loading
an adjective. But you need to know how to
loading
use each of these types of adjectives
loading
and we're going to do that right now,
loading
right here in this lesson!
loading
An adjective that ends in ING is used to describe the
loading
characteristics of something the
loading
characteristics of a person or a place
loading
or a thing or a situation.
loading
loading
Adjectives that end in ED are used to describe an
loading
emotion or a feeling and it's usually a
loading
temporary thing something that only
loading
people can have generally, only people
loading
have feelings, most of the time. But some
loading
animals can also have feelings.
loading
But you can't use ED adjectives to describe the
loading
feelings of a thing or of the situation
loading
because they don't have feelings! If you
loading
say that something or someone is boring,
loading
they or it makes you feel bored. So, the
loading
thing or the person that is boring is
loading
what makes you feel bored. It bores you
loading
OK, there's our verb! If you say that
loading
something is exciting, it makes you feel excited.
loading
Did you did you notice any patterns in those
loading
examples? If you're talking about a
loading
temporary feeling or an emotion then use
loading
the ED form of the adjective.
loading
If you're describing
loading
the thing or the person that caused
loading
those feelings, then use the ING form of
loading
the verb. For example, that movie was strange!
loading
Let's look at the difference again.
loading
He's bored. So, he's not
loading
interested in what's happening, he's not
loading
having a good time. If he's at a party
loading
perhaps he doesn't like the music or he
loading
doesn't really know anyone and he's got
loading
no one to talk to. He's bored. He feels bored.
loading
But if you say he's boring it
loading
means he's not an interesting person, that
loading
you don't enjoy talking to him. He's
loading
never got anything interesting to say.
loading
He's boring. He makes me feel bored.
loading
Alright, it's time to practice a little
loading
now. I'm going to read out a few
loading
sentences for you and I want you to try
loading
to choose if the adjective in each
loading
sentence is the correct adjective or not.
loading
Ready?
loading
What do you think?
loading
It's a "no"! Incorrect answer! I am very excited to see my sister.
loading
It's how I feel. I'm excited. I
loading
feel excited to see my sister.
loading
annoying I don't understand these
loading
Correct!
loading
The instructions are annoying. They're making
loading
me feel annoyed.
loading
I'm bored because i've got
loading
nothing to do. I feel bored.
loading
I felt so embarrassed! I felt embarrassed
loading
when I spilt tomato sauce down my dress on a date!
loading
I hate being the centre of attention! It was so embarrassing when
loading
they called my name and I had to go up on stage!
loading
It was embarrassing. The
loading
experience was embarrassing. I felt embarrassed.
loading
OK, I've made a worksheet for you so you can keep
loading
practicing these adjectives after this
loading
lesson finishes you can download it for
loading

loading
