1. Tips for learning English numbers 1-20
Learning English numbers and counting will be much easier if you can remember some of these tips:
- For 1 – 13: You need to remember them because sadly, there is no rule. Be patient and start learning them step by step:
1 = one /wʌn/
2 = two /tu/
3 = three /θri/
4 = four /fɔr/
5 = five /faɪv/
6 = six /sɪks/
7 = seven /ˈsɛvən/
8 = eight /eɪt/
9 = nine /naɪn/
10 = ten /tɛn/
11 = eleven /ɪˈlɛvən/
12 = twelve /twɛlv/
13 = thirteen /ˈθɜrˈtin/
- For number 14 – 20: Add ‘-teen’ after the number that is not number 1
Example:
- 14 = four + teen = fourteen
- 16 = six + teen = sixteen
So we have:
14 = fourteen /ˈfɔrˈtin/
15 = fifteen /fɪfˈtin/
16 = sixteen /sɪkˈstin/
17 = seventeen /ˈsɛvənˈtin/
18 = eighteen /eɪˈtin/
19 = nineteen /ˈnaɪnˈtin/
